DEAD SEA MAMMALS AND FISHES ASHORE THE COAST OF GHANA
The Ghana Wildlife Society (GWS) has noticed with great concern media reports and reports from our volunteers in the field of the death of over 60 dolphins and several fishes washed ashore along the coast of Axim and Osu. As an organization working towards the conservation and protection of wildlife, including marine life, GWS is very much concerned about the deaths of these marine mammals and fish.
In this vein, GWS applauds the swift action of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development to investigate the possible causes of these deaths and its repercussion to public health. We are calling on the public, especially inhabitants living in these areas to provide the government the necessary assistance in their investigations.
We also encourage the public to adhere to the calls by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture to desist from consuming or selling these dead animals and those who have already consumed the products to avail themselves for health monitoring.
We again call for calm among the public and call on the investigative agencies to be swift and resort to the best available scientific evidence to unearth the cause(s) of this troubling situation.
GWS will closely monitor the situation and provide updates as and when available. We will also provide support to the government if the need be.
